Decarbonising cement remains one of the sector’s greatest challenges, with around 70% of emissions coming from raw materials rather than fuels and simply switching energy sources will not deliver the transformation needed. Heidelberg Materials is leading the way with its Brevik project, the first commercial-scale carbon capture facility for cement production in the world, proof that progress is real. Nina is passionate that in an era of heightened scrutiny, credibility matters which is why we established an externally verified carbon bank, ensuring every tonne of captured CO₂ during production of evoZero cement is documented, traceable, and never counted twice. This sets a transparent benchmark for genuine climate solutions.

Looking ahead, Nina believes carbon capture and storage is essential to achieving net zero cement. She points to Heidelberg Materials’ many forthcoming projects, including Padeswood in the UK, designed to capture nearly all site emissions by 2029. But, Nina cautions, technology alone will not be enough. Scalable solutions, robust policy frameworks, and transparent systems like ‘book and claim’ and chain of custody models are vital to widespread adoption. These measures, she explains, will enable evoZero, our carbon captured near-zero cement, to scale globally without additional emissions from transport, accelerating the transition to a truly sustainable construction industry.

Managing Scope 3 emissions is rapidly becoming a key pressure point for businesses. As Heidelberg Materials often represents a significant share of clients’ Scope 3 footprint, Marian understands the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing. By working closely with customers, she helps align credible low-carbon solutions with their net-zero commitments, ensuring progress is both practical and transparent from the outset.

Demand is growing for recycled materials such as RAP and advanced binders that extend pavement life, reducing embodied and whole-life carbon. 

Most recently, Adrian is seeing unprecedented levels of collaboration across suppliers, contractors, and clients: a cooperative approach that is critical to achieving national Net Zero targets while maintaining compliance, performance, and durability.

Building on successful innovations at Criggion, Adrian believes hydrogen and renewable energy will transform asphalt production by significantly reducing plant emissions. He expects rapid advances in digital tools for performance modelling and carbon tracking, enabling transparency from design through lifecycle assessment. Mainstream adoption of high-performance, low-carbon materials will also be pivotal, with specifications likely to mandate carbon reduction strategies. These changes, he believes, will accelerate innovation across the supply chain.
