  • Supplying the materials for the foundations for over 100 wind turbines at Hellrigg Wind Farm, Cumbria
  • Providing nearly 60 kilometres of access roads, five substations and five control rooms with a total power generation output of 207 megawatts

Nuclear

Nuclear power is a long-established part of the UK’s energy mix, and it will continue to play a major role in reliably generating affordable low-carbon energy. Since the 1980s, we’ve worked with the nuclear industry, with flagship projects including Hinkley Point C, the proposed first of a new generation of nuclear sites. We’re the supplier of choice to the client and contractors for the provision of concrete, cement and aggregates.

Building materials for the nuclear industry

Concrete is a practical material for a permanent shield against the dangers of radiation. It’s also:

  • Cost effective
  • Easy to use
  • Structurally self-supporting
  • Virtually indestructible
  • Without maintenance costs

evoBuild low carbon GGBS is our sustainable ground granulated blast furnace slag product and is used to safeguard radioactive waste during the decommissioning of old power plants. Its particle size distribution enables excellent flow properties with good water retention.

Leading the way in UK construction with BS EN 19443 certification

Heidelberg Materials is the only company in the UK construction industry to achieve BS EN 19443 certification. This recognised standard supports a strong nuclear safety culture and ensures suppliers to the nuclear sector meet the highest quality requirements. It demonstrates Heidelberg Materials' commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality solutions for the energy sector.

Find out more by reading: How Heidelberg Materials UK leads the production of nuclear grade concrete.

Hydropower, dams and reservoirs

Concrete’s high compressive strength allows it to resist high water pressure, making it ideal for dams and reservoirs. Our waterproof concrete solutions resist erosion from flowing water and have dense masses that stabilise water structures against movement. Waterproof concrete also provides a durable, impermeable barrier to prevent water loss from dams and reservoirs over decades.

To control cracking, FibreCrete, our premium range of fibre-reinforced concrete, can be applied to water structures. To support the construction of energy generation infrastructure, our Power range of cement-bound sands and grouts can be used. Our low carbon materials, including evoZero carbon captured cement and evoBuild low carbon concrete, are increasingly being used for more sustainable hydropower projects, too.

Gas

Gas currently forms an integral part of the UK’s generation mix. It’s a reliable, flexible source of electricity that will continue to play a major role alongside low carbon technologies.

As the cleanest fossil fuel, gas is used to replace ageing coal-fired generators. We’ve supplied high-workability concrete to the £450 million Severn Power Station, near Newport, Gwent, as well as the construction of the Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) import terminals in South Hooks, West Wales. We also delivered 245,000m3 of concrete to Troll A , the highest concrete platform ever constructed for the oil and gas sector.

We’re actively working with the sector to provide alternate and more sustainable building materials to projects, including evoZero carbon captured cement and evoBuild low carbon concrete.

Solar

We supply the solar industry with a variety of building materials to support the production of clean, affordable power. These include aggregates for sub-bases and concrete for the foundations of solar infrastructure.

Distribution

Small modular reactors (SMRs)

SMRs play an important part in the UK's future low-carbon energy mix. They provide reliable, low-carbon electricity with a smaller physical footprint and generally shorter construction times than conventional nuclear power stations.

Our Power range of heat-conducting concrete solutions are used in the manufacturing of these smaller-scale nuclear reactors. We’re also the only heavy building materials manufacturer in the UK certified to produce nuclear grade concrete in accordance with BS EN ISO 19443.

Landfall

Our Power range products are used in various landfall applications, including at Inch Cape, one of Scotland’s largest offshore wind farms. We’ve supplied 242m3 of PowerCrete heat conducting concrete to this project, which will create enough green energy to power 1.6 million homes when it becomes fully operational, which is expected to be in 2027.

Biomass and waste to energy

Today’s waste-to-energy plants are highly efficient and use municipal solid waste as their fuel rather than coal, oil or natural gas. We have significant experience contributing towards large projects that take advantage of these relatively new methods of energy creation, focusing on preserving a sustainable planet for future generations.

Materials we supply to the biomass industry include our fibre reinforced concrete, FibreCrete Unlike steel mesh, FibreCrete isn’t corroded by biomass. 3,000m3 of this concrete was used in the construction of a new 2.4 megawatt anaerobic digestion plant in Cumbria.

Transmission and storage

Ports and wharves

Cement bound granular material (CBGM) is a type of hydraulically bound mixture made from a blend of aggregates, cement, and water. It provides a cost-effective and durable alternative to traditional flexible materials and withstands the heavy demands of ports and harbors. We provide CGBM as well as hard-wearing concrete and asphalt products which all stand up to these harsh environments.

Grid upgrades

As the UK invests in upgrading its electricity grid, we can supply aggregates, concrete and asphalt essential for delivering the substations, foundations, access roads and infrastructure needed to power a low-carbon future.

Our Asphalt and Concrete Collect & Go services provide quick, reliable access to high‑quality materials, helping keep projects on schedule and reducing downtime. These flexible options support both major infrastructure works and smaller maintenance activities, ensuring a consistent and dependable supply.

Our utilities experience

Decommissioning

We supply up to 2,000 tonnes of GGBS every year to Sellafield Ltd for the decommissioning of one of Britain’s older nuclear power plants in Cumbria. A 90 per cent GGBS to 10 per cent CEM I ratio is used in the grout for the encapsulation of waste streams process, which comes from the thermal oxide reprocessing plant. This high ratio controls the strength gain, reduces the heat generated, minimises the risk of thermal cracking and restricts diffusion.
