Asphalt

Asphalt is one of the most important materials for utilities.

Our Duralayer Multi asphalt is specifically designed to meet the void compaction ratio required for trench reinstatement, providing high levels of workability making it ideal for handlay utility work. Engineered to achieve a design air void content of ≤ 5%, Duralayer Multi offers excellent compaction characteristics, to meet Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH) industry standards.

DuraLayer Multi helps to:

  • Reduce permeability
  • Enhance durability
  • Support long-term pavement performance

Its enhanced layer thickness capability enables reinstatements to be completed in fewer layers, helping to simplify installation, reduce construction time and improve productivity on site.

Cement bound sand (CBS)

We’ve specifically designed PowerSand CBS, our range of cement bound sand, to protect energy infrastructure and storage. All PowerSand products are Energy Networks Association (ENATS)*  compliant  and work to reduce:

  • Installation costs
  • Cable requirements, by reducing energy loss from the cables

PowerSand is ideal for trench reinstatement projects. It protects and manages heat in utility trenches, such as high-voltage cabling.

*The product is classified as non-traditional as a part of the ENA TS 97-1 requirements. Compliance relies on the material source, please check with the technical team.

The role of PowerSand CBS in enhancing renewable energy infrastructure

In April 2023, the National Grid launched The Great Grid Upgrade, the largest overhaul of the electricity network in generations. 17 major infrastructure projects are underway to scale and update the Grid, spanning installation of new cables, pylons, and substations.

PowerSand CBS is one of the specialist materials being relied upon to protect, bed, and infill some of the new high voltage and ultra-high voltage cables. Having supplied PowerSand CBS to a number of renewable energy projects, we understand the importance of getting the specification right - and why PowerSand CBS is integral to the growth of renewable energy storage and supply in the UK.

Primary & recycled aggregates

We supply both virgin and recycled aggregates for trench and cable backfilling, as well as for pipe bedding and drainage. Across utility infrastructure projects, our recycled aggregates are used to support utilities contractors to:

  • Reduce waste
  • Lower embodied carbon
  • Supporting sustainability targets

The benefits of using recycled aggregates in utility infrastructure

Recycled aggregates offer a sustainable alternative to primary materials. At our recycling centres, we process a range of construction and demolition materials to produce our range of recycled aggregates, from recycled sand to Recycled Type 1.

Applications of these materials in utilities include:

  • Backfill
  • Pipe bedding applications
  • Sub-bases
  • Drainage
  • Road and footway reinstatements

PowerFill

For long-distance underground cable routes where future access may be needed, we provide PowerFill. This carefully selected sand accommodates minor ground movements, making it ideal for stability.

Specialist services for utilities

Recycling

We have recycling centres across the country set up specifically for utility and construction waste. Utilities FAQs

What building materials are required for utility infrastructure projects?

It varies depending on the type of network getting installed, maintained or upgraded. Street works and road reinstatements rely on a combination of asphalt and aggregates, whereas the backfilling of high-voltage and ultra-high voltage cables requires specialist sand, such as cement bound sand.

To understand the most suitable material for your project, please contact our team.

What utility sectors do you work with?

From electricity and gas to water and telecoms, we work with all types of utility projects to supply the building materials and services needed to deliver critical infrastructure across the UK.

Do you supply materials for both planned and emergency utility works?

Yes, we supply both planned infrastructure upgrades and reactive maintenance works, providing utility contractors with the products and services they need to keep projects moving.

Our Asphalt Collect & Go service is ideal for emergency works. Our nationwide plants open between 6am and 3pm Monday to Friday, and from 6.30am to 12pm on Saturdays. Here, you can collect a range of asphalt products for reinstatement projects, including:

  • DuraLayer Multi designed to meet void compaction targets as specified in the SROH
  • A full range of standard products (e.g. hot rolled asphalt and pre-coated chippings)
  • Specialist products like our Tuff, Dura, and Sports ranges
  • A range tools available from our on site shops including wheelbarrows, spazzels, overbonding tape ,   pre-coated chippings and PPE items

Plus, with the Asphalt Collect & Go app, you can collect points and earn rewards to redeem at your selected retailers.

Some of our plants can open on request. To check individual opening and closing times and learn more about this service, please view: Asphalt Collect & Go.

What asphalt products do you have that are suitable for utility reinstatement work?

DuraLayer Multi asphalt has a ≤5% void content, which is within the SROH standards. Reinstatement work that uses DuraLayer Multi over a typically-used asphalt such as AC10 is more likely to meet the specification.

Do you work with water utility contractors?

Yes. We supply water suppliers and their delivery partners with the materials, services, and support required for network maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and new infrastructure projects.
