Quality, performance, and testing

All our waste is approved to the WRAP protocol and the Specification of Highway Works (SHW) and tested thoroughly to ensure quality and performance.

We also offer brownfield solutions for soil testing, report assessment, and cost-effective disposal options using the knowledge and capability of our whole group, including Mick George and B&A.

Why is recycling of aggregates and construction waste important?

We need to reduce the amount of construction waste that ends up in landfill. Advancements in recycling processes mean more materials can be washed, crushed, and processed, and given a second life than ever before. So far, we’ve processed over 9 million tonnes of recycled aggregates, a figure we hope to grow within our sustainability commitments.

Collectively, we all have a part to play in giving our industry a more circular and sustainable future. Recycling and choosing recycled aggregates for your construction project is one of many steps in the right direction.

Aggregates recycling FAQs

Find the answers to your questions about aggregates and construction waste recycling below. For more information, please get in touch with our customer service team.

What are recycled aggregates?

Recycled aggregates are not derived directly from virgin deposits, like primary aggregates. Instead, they have been used before and are not going through their first-use lifecycle.

Recycled aggregates are a material made from crushed and processed construction and demolition waste. After these building materials are cleaned, crushed, and separated from unwanted materials (like dust and soil), the waste is suitable for use in road construction, drainage, and landscaping applications.

These aggregates offer circular sustainability characteristics, without any reduction in quality.

For more details, please read our technical article: Benefits of recycled aggregates.

What are the benefits of aggregate and construction waste recycling?

There are many benefits of recycling aggregates or waste from your construction project, as well as choosing them instead of primary aggregates in the future.

These include:

Improved sustainability: Recycling reduces the use of natural resources, diverts materials from landfill, and lowers overall carbon emissions for projects that incorporate the approach.

Excellent performance: Recycled aggregates perform just as well as virgin materials, thanks to the rigorous checks carried out during and after processing.

Explore these benefits further: Benefits of recycled aggregates.

Are recycled aggregates cost effective?

Whether recycled aggregates will be more or less cost effective for your construction project costs depends on several factors, including transportation distances, materials disposal fees, and the cost of virgin materials. Please get in touch using the contact form on this page to discuss the suitability of recycled aggregates for your project.

How are aggregates recycled?

At Heidelberg Materials UK, we recycle aggregates in a way that ensures the end product is high quality and can be reused in construction projects. We do this by refining, crushing, washing, grading, and mixing the materials. Then, we thoroughly test all recycled materials to ensure quality.

How are recycled aggregates made?

Recycled aggregates are made of waste materials from construction and demolition activities.

Waste is sorted, crushed and screened to remove contaminants. This makes sure the necessary shape, size, and particle size distribution for specific construction applications is achieved.

Does Heidelberg Materials offer construction waste recycling?

Yes, we have recycling centres around the UK where materials from construction and demolition activities can be processed for recycling. We then turn these materials into quality recycled aggregates for use across the construction industry.

Please bring your waste materials to your nearest aggregate recycling centre. You can also use our tipper and grab hire service to make it easier to collect unwanted materials from your project and transport them to the facility closest to you.
