Underwater Concrete

Heidelberg Materials range of Underwater Concrete has been created in partnership with Sika having worked together to create a concrete solution, which is suitable for underwater applications. Heidelberg Materials range of Underwater Concrete is available from all of our static and mobile production plants

Underwater concrete is used where concrete needs to be installed below the water line. This product has been used in the construction of many prestigious projects including Leeds Train Station and Eden Viaduct.

Standard concrete's density is more than twice of water, and hardens in the same time underwater as it does in dry conditions.

Care should be taken to minimise disruption of the concrete, as this can cause washout of fine and cement material especially in running water due to the risk of mixing further water into the mixed concrete. Heidelberg Materials uses superior anti-washout properties to minimise these effects.

Suggested applications

The addition of Sika’s UCS pack allows for easier placement of concrete under water. As such, our Underwater Concrete solution can be used for the following applications:

  • Marine construction
  • Bridges - for underwater elements
  • Water industry structures
  • Any project which requires concrete to be used under water

Sustainable concrete solutions

Heidelberg Materials concrete can incorporate a proportion of Regen, a cement replacement material that generates a much lower level of embodied CO2 emissions than ordinary cement, minimising environmental impact. Recycled aggregates can also be incorporated subject to local availability and mix design.
