Foamed asphalt

evoBuild Foamed Asphalt is a cold mix asphalt containing up to 95% recycled materials, reclaimed fillers/additives, bitumen, cement, and water. It can reduce the carbon emissions associated with asphalt production and laying by a minimum of 40% when compared with conventional hot mix materials. As such, it’s known as evoBuild Circular Foamed Asphalt 40 R95.

Engineered for high workability, the cold mix asphalt can be immediately placed and compacted on site, or stockpiled for later use. We’ve also designed and manufactured the foamed asphalt in accordance with ISO 9001 and in compliance with Specification for Highways Work Clause 948, TRL Report 611, and more.

Benefits of evoBuild Foamed Asphalt

From cutting carbon emissions by 40% as a minimum to increased productivity and workability, evoBuild Foamed Asphalt delivers considerable benefits to any application.

  • Boosts carbon savings

evoBuild Foamed Asphalt requires less energy to manufacture than conventional asphalt, cutting carbon emissions by a minimum of 40%. It’s also manufactured and installed to SHW Series 900, Clause 948 and supported by PAS 2080, a global standard for carbon management in buildings and infrastructure.

  • Reduces hazard exposure

The low production temperatures needed to manufacture evoBuild foamed asphalt greatly reduce fumes, odours, and steam emissions. This minimises the risk of burns from materials and offers a generally safer and more comfortable working environment for operatives and road users.

  • Enhances workability

evoBuild foamed asphalt can be immediately placed and compacted on site, or it can be stockpiled for later use, extending working times and ensuring continued supply.

  • Increases productivity

With this cold mix asphalt, material curing times are reduced, enabling earlier trafficking, increased outputs, and reduced programme durations. All lead to less disruption for road users.

  • Promotes circular economy

Realising value from existing pavement materials, evoBuild foamed asphalt reduces waste and promotes a more circular economy.

  • Reuses hazardous waste

evoBuild Foamed Asphalt encapsulates tar-bound planings, allowing for their safe reuse in carriageway construction. This avoids substantial fees associated with transporting and disposing of hazardous waste at regulated landfill sites.

How evoBuild Foamed Asphalt is made

We manufacture the asphalt mix by injecting water and air into hot bitumen under high pressure. This causes the bitumen to foam, increasing its volume and decreasing its viscosity, allowing the effective coating of aggregate.

The recycled materials that can be added to the mix include:

evoBuild Foamed Asphalt FAQs

What is cold mix asphalt?

Cold mix or foamed asphalt is mixed and applied at ambient temperatures. It’s different to hot mix asphalt, which requires high temperatures in production. Cold mix asphalt is a more cost-effective material than hot mix asphalt and offers more opportunity for carbon savings.

How long does cold mix asphalt take to cure?

Typically, cold mix asphalt takes several days to set and cure to full strength, however you can overlay within a few hours. Curing time is influenced by several factors, including weather conditions and thickness of the application. It takes a few weeks for the asphalt to reach maximum strength and durability, though it is ready for light traffic immediately after compaction.

How to lay cold mix asphalt?

Cold mix asphalt is laid with traditional paving equipment and typically finished with a Pneumatic Tyre Roller (PTR) to seal the surface and provide a tight finish.
