evoBuild low carbon concrete

evoBuild low carbon concrete makes specifying more sustainable concrete easier and helps to target carbon reductions in construction. It offers a CO₂ reduction of at least 50 per cent compared to a fixed Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) reference value.

Recycling

Our recycling centres are your one-stop shop for tipping construction waste and collecting quality recycled products. Here, we can process a range of construction and demolition waste materials, whilst you can collect a range of building materials including aggregates, asphalt and concrete.

Padiham Greenway resurfacing with CarbonLock

A busy 1.2km section of a Lancashire route was resurfaced with our low carbon asphalt. The solution reduced the scheme’s carbon footprint by at least 25 per cent, saving 5.6 tonnes of CO2.

Replacing CEM I with calcined clay at the new London Museum

C32/40 and C40/50 concretes containing 30 per cent calcined clay supplied by us were used to create a permanent reinforced concrete beam at the new London Museum in Smithfield.

Working closely with GW Highways and Kent County Council, we designed a durable, lower carbon asphalt containing 60 per cent recycled content to resurface the A20 in Maidstone.

At Heidelberg Materials UK, sustainable building materials are products responsibly sourced and designed to minimise environmental impact throughout their lifecycle. This means:

  • Supporting circular construction for a healthier, more resilient built environment

Do you offer recycled or reclaimed building materials?

Yes, we offer a range of recycled aggregates. We also include recycled asphalt planings (RAP) within some of our asphalt products. We regularly test and monitor our products to ensure the quality matches that of virgin materials.

Are your sustainable building materials compliant with UK building regulations?

Yes. Heidelberg Materials hold several accreditations and certifications that demonstrate compliance with UK building regulations and industry standards including:

  • ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • BS EN Standards Compliance: cement (BS EN 197), concrete (BS EN 206), and aggregates (BS EN 12620), ensuring conformity with building standards

How can sustainable materials help meet BREEAM requirements?

Using sustainable materials helps achieve BREEAM credits by reducing embodied carbon, promoting resource efficiency, and supporting responsible sourcing. 

For example, we offer lower carbon concrete, recycled and secondary aggregates, and responsibly sourced cement products certified to BES 6001, which directly contribute to credits under Materials, Waste, and Responsible Sourcing categories. 

These solutions enable projects to lower environmental impact while meeting stringent BREEAM sustainability benchmarks.

How do your sustainable products advance the construction industry toward its commitment of reaching net zero carbon by 2050?

Each of our sustainable building materials has been designed to provide carbon reductions, reduce reliance on virgin materials, and drive a more circular economy. We developed our evoBuild range of sustainable products to help you easily identify our low carbon and circular products.

We’re also heavily invested in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. By building our new CCS plant in Padeswood, north Wales, we’ll be able to produce carbon captured evoZero cement here in the UK, which will help construction companies reduce the embodied carbon with their projects.

A47 resurfacing using a range of carbon reduction measures

We resurfaced 10 miles of the A47 Acle Straight near Great Yarmouth using evoBuild foamed asphalt, recycled materials, and an electric plant, resulting in a carbon saving of more than 400 tonnes of CO₂e.

Ashton Canal Bridge construction with evoBuild low carbon concrete

263.2 cubic metres of evoBuild low carbon concrete (containing 85 per cent GGBS) was supplied to help construct this Manchester bridge, providing the strength, sustainability credentials, and very light colour that Hawkins Brown, the architects, were after.
