Fibre-reinforced concrete solutions for agriculture

Reduced construction time, increased durability.

Farm range products are also available using our proprietary FibreCrete®. Heidelberg Materials’ FibreCrete is a premium range of fibre-reinforced concrete products, engineered with advanced fibre technology to boost both performance and durability.

FibreCrete not only enhances durability and efficiency but also has the potential to eliminate the requirement for structural steel mesh reinforcement, streamlining your construction process. Our macro-synthetic fibre-reinforced concrete uses high-strength synthetic fibres, making it ideal for agricultural applications.

Design assumptions: Slab thickness and macro-synthetic fibre reinforcement suitable for documented loadings providing slabs are ground supported on sub-grade to a minimum 5% CBR value.

Contact our technical team for loadings and/or dimensions outside the above parameters.

From the experts: Concrete for farming

The original specification for the bays was a concrete with reinforcing mesh to provide the structural performance required.

But I have used Heidelberg Materials' FibreCrete on previous projects and know what it can deliver in terms of time and cost savings. With this proven track record it was not difficult to convince the client of its benefits and the results speak for themselves.

Farming concrete FAQs

Learn more about farming concrete below or visit our ready-mixed concrete FAQs.

Why should I use farming concrete instead of other standard mixes?

The range has been specifically designed for the aggressive environments found on farms and all products are easy to use, durable, hygienic and help mitigate cracks. They also comply with all relevant agricultural standards and, when laid correctly, are highly resistant to abrasion, erosion and chemical attack.

How soon can I use a vehicle after placing my farming concrete?

Please don’t use a vehicle within seven days of placing your farming concrete, as early usage by heavy vehicles can cause cracking. If you do need to use the concrete earlier than this, please contact us and we can design a concrete mix bespoke to your needs.

Does Heidelberg Materials UK’s farm range of concrete comply with DEFRA guidelines on manure storage?

Yes, it complies with DEFRA regulatory position documents and British and European standards EN 206 and BS 8500.

What sub-base do I need for agricultural concrete?

As a general rule, lay a minimum of 50-75mm graded granular fill material. Then, compact, before adding a binding layer of sand. This will form a close knot between the sub-base and the concrete. It’s critical to have a stable sub-base - without one, the final concrete slab may move or crack.

Read our technical advice for more information about what causes concrete to crack and how you can reduce the risk.

How thick should the farming concrete slab be?

The usual recommendation for farming concrete slab thickness is 150mm. However, this should be increased if there are significant loadings or poor round conditions. The use of macro-synthetic fibres may allow for reduced slab depth.

For more information, please contact us or read our concrete expansion joints article.

Do I need to reinforce the agricultural concrete?

The need for reinforcement will be project specific. However, we can supply structural macro fibre-reinforced concrete to replace most steel mesh options. With FarmTank, structural reinforcing steel will normally be required in both slabs and walls.
