Double success at Highways Awards 2026

We’re celebrating a double award win at this year’s Highways Awards , which recognise and reward excellence, innovation and collaboration across the UK highways sector.

We scooped the Sustainability Innovation of the Year Award for our hydrogen fuelled asphalt production trial at our Criggion plant in Powys, mid-Wales.

Our UK-first project used hydrogen to decarbonise asphalt production on an industrial scale, demonstrating the potential to produce low carbon asphalt for use in construction.

During the trial, hydrogen was used to replace liquid fossil fuels to produce more than 1,300 tonnes of asphalt without any impact on the quality or performance of the material.

“We are delighted to have been recognised for our pioneering trial, which demonstrates the role alternative fuels could play in the decarbonisation of heavy industry,” said Becky Murphy, Area Director Aggregates, Asphalt & Recycling – North, who was presented with the award at the ceremony in London by comedian Hugh Dennis.

We also celebrated a win with project partner AECOM and client Somerset Council for the M5 Junction 26 Chelston Link project in the Small Project of the Year (under £10 million) category.

The complex scheme to replace a rapidly deteriorating concrete road in Wellington, Somerset involved carriageway reconstruction and included a number of lower carbon techniques to minimise its environmental impact.

The award follows recognition for the project earlier this year when it won the Project Excellence and Innovation Award at the NEC Martin Barnes Awards.
