evoBuild low carbon GGBS takes centre stage in concrete mix for new London development

Heidelberg Materials evoBuild low carbon GGBS, formally Hanson’s Regen GGBS (ground granulated blastfurnace slag) has been specified for use in a high profile mixed-used development in Shoreditch in the East End of London.

The Stage will offer a mix of living, office, retail and leisure space when it is completed in early 2021 and is named after Shakespeare’s Curtain Theatre, the remains of which were discovered on the site and are now being excavated.

evoBuild low carbon GGBS is a cement replacement product, which enhances the durability of concrete while adding to its sustainability credentials. It was specified for use in the foundations of the 37-storey residential tower as it helps minimise the production of heat, reducing the risk of thermal cracking.

Using evoBuild low carbon GGBS reduces the carbon impact of concrete through both its manufacture and its use: replacing one tonne of Portland cement with one tonne of evoBuild low carbon GGBS reduces its embodied CO2 by around 850kg. As a result, the 750 tonnes of evoBuild low carbon GGBS that will be used at The Stage, is equivalent to taking nearly 1,600 cars off of the capital’s roads for a year.
