Work to support veterans and reservists rewarded

We are delighted to receive the silver award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, demonstrating our commitment to being an Armed Forces-friendly employer.

It is a step up from the bronze award we received last year and recognises the work we have done to support veterans, reservists and their families, and encourage more former service personnel into our business.

In 2022 we signed the Armed Forces Covenant as part of our aim to be a fair, respectful and inclusive company and, since then, we have extended our FAIR committee to include regional transport manager Aaron Smith, a representative from the Armed Forces.

A former RAF sergeant, Aaron is implementing activities to support our commitment to the Covenant. These include raising funds for the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal, holding a ‘lunch and learn’ to talk to our employees about his experiences of being a veteran now working at Hanson, and launching our Armed Forces Network.

The purpose of the network is to share information and experiences; educate ourselves; recognise how we can continue to support reservists and the spouses and partners of those called up for duty; and understand what we can do to further attract people into Hanson.

“We have made it a policy to support the operations of the UK Armed Forces and to enable employees who are – or wish to become – reservists to have the time off needed to fulfil their obligations,” said CEO Simon Willis.

“We have also developed our relationship with the Career Transition Partnership to better understand the skills of those looking for work and have held sessions with our recruiting managers to educate them on the range of transferable skills former service personnel offer and the contribution they can make to our business.”
